Freaky Playdough
I almost forgot to post this funny photo. This is what happens when a 32 year old man plays playdough with his daughter! 
Lewis' Half-Birthday and other exciting news...
Ok, I actually want to start with the very exciting news (now that they've blogged it we can tell too). Although I have been honoured to be called "Auntie" by a few cousins and friends, we are happy to announce that we are going to be an actual Auntie and Uncle! Jason and Michaelia are expecting their first baby in July. We are so happy for them and can't wait to meet the next Olfert! Check out their blog for the very first picture of baby, and maybe help them decide what they can call it for the next few months instead of he/she.
Today is Lewis' half-birthday. He is now 6 months old! How the time flies. He is more observant and interactive than ever. He has started eating solids, having now feasted on carrots and peas. Cereal is on the menu for tomorrow. Mmm. And one of the cutest things he does lately is try to grab things, such as a toy, a face, his toes, etc. but it is humorous because his depth perception has not developed fully yet so he is always swiping and grabbing for things but misses. And he is very vocal, but it is mostly squeals, which I hope means he is happy and content. My fav
ourite is when Jaina makes him giggle and laugh, it is the best sound in the whole world. And only she seems to be able to get him to do it full force. Here is a cute picture of Lewis with his glow-worm. He loves it so much! We joke that it always looks like he's making out with it.
Not knowing when we would have time to make it to Sears for portraits, and knowing how fast changes happen, I decided to try a photo session at home today. We were pretty happy with the results. (Hooray for digital cameras, I don't have to tell the extremely large number of photos taken in order to get some good ones). So, here are a couple of slide shows featuring Lewis. Please excuse the excessive amount of pictures, I guess I am a proud parent and couldn't narrow it down any more.

Hockeoke
So, Matt and I went on a date last night. (My mom was babysitting, and my he owed my sister a hockey ticket, so... anyways). We went to this sports bar/pub to watch the hockey game. It was like a theme date, we both wore our Flames jerseys. It was a great game and we were enjoying watching it on the big screen. Then, near the end of the second intermission, they lit up the "stage", started up the lights, and Karaoke began! We couldn't believe they would have karaoke during the 3rd period of the hockey game. But it actually turned out to be quite entertaining. It was hard to focus on one or the other (we were almost right beside the stage). Soon we were watching two guys in Flames jerseys belting out "Money For Nothing" (the game had started by this time, by the way, and we were quite curious about what would happen if the Flames scored. Would we all be deafened as they shouted into the mic? But not to worry). This was followed by two girls singing "Baby Got Back" . Interesting. But, not to mock karaoke as I can't even carry a tune and would never ever have the guts to get up there. Most of the people were really good so it was entertaining. And the Flames ended up beating Colorado 5-2 (GO FLAMES!). So it turned out to be a fun date.

Perfection?
I was out shopping for groceries Monday night. Standing in front of the melons, deciding whether or not to buy one, I noticed the label on the one below (all the ones in the bin were like this, but not the bin next to it). My decision made, I brought it home to show Matt. He said he thought it was blog-worthy, hence this post. We were quite amused. We thought it was "perfect".
Other weird things this week: the weather. Yesterday it was -19 degrees C (with a wind chill making it feel -30). Today, it is 5 degrees and everything is starting to melt. The forecast said 12 degrees Saturday. Tropical! Anyways, it was nice enough that Jaina and I went out to play in the snow (while it's still here) while Lewis napped this morning. One fun thing we have discovered this winter is that our backyard, having a slight slope down toward the back fence (for drainage purposes) which makes it not quite ideal for putting a kiddie pool out in the summer, is great for sledding in the winter. Jaina rides her toboggan down until she hits our dirt pile or small tree, which is just the perfect ride for a little kid. And perfect too, for the parent who only has to pull her up a small distance for another ride.
Another fun thing we have done a couple of times in the past week is babysit cousin Devun for a few hours in between Kristie and Nate's work shifts. Jaina enjoys playing with him (although she is a bit of a mother hen, but at least she is trying to help) and Devun (we think) has enjoyed it too. Lewis was just fascinated with this little toddler walking around our house. Here are some photos:

What's up in January...
Well, it's been a while since I last posted. And I had been thinking that January has been such a relaxing month, compared to the hustle and bustle of December. But I guess we have been busy still. So, let's see, can I summarize the month...
It looks like I will not be returning to work next year. My former job-share partner teacher and I put together a proposal to share a class 1 day a week(me)/ 4 days a week. But it was not accepted, so we are on to Plan B for next year, which is to have me stay home. I have quite mixed feelings about it, I was actually surprised at how sad I did feel for a while once the job option was gone. But it is a wonderful opportunity to spend time with Jaina and Lewis, who are changing everyday before my eyes. I am happy to be home next year because I don't want to miss a minute of it, really. Matt and I decided that it will be a very good test year to see whether we can afford for me to stay home for even longer, should we decide that's what we want to do. But we are fortunate not to have to make that a final decision yet, as I am entitled to take next school year off as parental leave, and still be employed by the school board the following year if I choose to come back. I have given up my actual position at the school I have been at for the past 5 years though, by staying home next year. I think I was sad about that because I really loved the community, the kids, and my colleagues there. However, I need to get over my fear of change, and know that I will find myself in another situation that I also will like at another time, in another place. So we are kind of taking a "wait-and-see" attitude as to what will happen after next year, and consider ourselves fortunate that we have the extra time to make such a decision.
Jaina, Lewis and I have been happily playing at home, getting back into some sort of routine, and getting out for occasional visits with friends and other activities. Jaina began taking a gymnastics class which lasts until the end of March, which she is quite enjoying. She has a little fear of heights, but with time and the encouraging examples of the other kids, I'm sure she will overcome it. For now, she's just having lots of fun on the trampoline, mats, low beams, and other equipment. We have had some nice visits with friends this month too. We continue to go to storytime at the library, most weeks. However, Lewis no longer sleeps through the whole thing. Sometimes he does, but at other times he has been awake and I have to take him out of his stroller to sit on my lap, and he is quite fascinated with the sights and sounds of the library (today, there was a baby girl there too and they almost interrupted storytime with their cooing, gurgling and squealing at each other). On Saturday we were at Matt's cousin Jocelyn and her husband Jason's house to celebrate the first birthday of their daughter, Megan. Lots of family took part in the celebration so it was a nice opportunity to visit with them.
The weather this month has been interesting. Last week, we hit a record high of 14 degrees C. We took advantage of this nice day to visit the Zoo with Kristie and Devun and friends of theirs (where we saw the new baby giraffe!). It was a beautiful day and a bit of a respite from winter. I think many people have cabin fever this time of year, as it was quite busy that day. Tomorrow, I think the high is supposed to be around -14 degrees C, and as I look out the window right now I can see that it is starting to snow and blow out there.
Other than that, we have not been up to much. We have had both sets of Southern Alberta grandparents up to visit on different weekends. We've been swimming one Sunday afternoon, and on another I took Jaina skating for the first time (she got those double-bladed "bobskates" for Christmas). She had so much fun that she was the last one on the ice, and only the sight of the zamboni coming out to clean the ice was enough to convince her to come off. Oddly though, I haven't convinced her to go back or to try one of the outdoor rinks near here. That is a goal for February I guess. Matt also bought some skates, and said he might have to go by himself once to see if he can still skate, since its been so long!
Looking forward to February (I will try to post more than once a month), as the kidlets and I will be visiting my mom for a week while Matt is on call (peace and quiet for both of us, in different ways). Jaina is excitedly making Valentines as well, and by the end of the month Lewis will be half a year old!

Christmas and New Years Festivities
Well, we are now winding down from a busy and exciting holiday. We spent Christmas in Taber and Lethbridge with both sides of the family. Jason and Michaelia were home from New York and we had a wonderful visit with them. We had many great visits with many family members and quite a few fabulous dinners and other activities. We first visited Taber before Christmas, where we got to visit with Grandma, Papa, Auntie Veronica and Uncle Chris and also my Granny. On the 24th we joined the Olfert and Pinches clans in Lethbridge for a wonderful turkey dinner. Here are Jaina and Lewis by the tree that night:
Then it was back to Taber, where we spent the night. The next morning was very exciting. Santa had visited and left gifts, a note, and had eaten the cookies Jaina left out for him. Here is our little snowman Lewis by his Christmas stocking:

I think that Christmas will be so much fun in the coming years, Matt and I enjoyed Jaina's excitement as much as we enjoyed anything else. She is now an old pro at gift opening, having opened both her and her brother's gifts at 3 (yes, count 'em, 3) different family get-togethers. After dinner on the 25th we headed back to Lethbridge to celebrate and exchange gifts with Grandma, Papa, Uncle Jason and Auntie Michaelia on the 26th. Here we are in Lethbridge on the 26th: 
We spent the remaining days until the 30th in Lethbridge, where Jaina enjoyed going to a play with her grandparents, we went to a Lethbridge Hurricanes hockey game, played in the remnants of a large but unexpected snowfall, and went for a swim at the wavepool/waterslides at a nearby hotel. Here is Jaina with a snowman we made, and playing with Papa on the big snow "mountain" at a parking lot near his house: 
We enjoyed one more dinner in Taber before packing up the car (to the hilt!) and returning to Calgary. But it didn't end there. That evening we had Uncle Shane and Grandma Shirley over for a visit and a Christmas dinner and celebration. The next day, Grandma, Papa, Jason and Michaelia arrived to celebrate New Years with us. Grandma and Papa babysat, so Jason, Michaelia, Matt and I were able to go to the Flames/Oilers game on New Years Eve (thanks to some tickets given to us by Matt's mom and Chris - we love you!!). It was a great time, and we got to watch Calgary kick Edmonton's butt, much to the disappointment of Jason and Michaelia. They do get credit for being brave enough to cheer for their team amongst the Flames fans on New Years.
The game was an early one so when we got home we had a fondue and rang in 2007 (then went to bed at 12:10, party animals that we all are). The next day Matt's parents treated us to a fabulous brunch at a nearby restaurant. Then the girls did some shopping before Matt's parents headed home. We got one more relaxing night to visit with Jason and Michaelia, who headed back to New York this evening. We had a blessing in disguise, being able to visit with them a good part of the day today due to airline delays. They may feel differently as they arrive back quite late, but it was nice to have a little more time to hang out together. So, all in all, it was quite a busy but memorable holiday season for us. They should be posted in the next couple of days. We hope everyone else had a wonderful holiday season with loved ones as well.

Zoo Lights
On Saturday night, we had the chance to visit Zoo Lights with Grandma and Papa. The night was a little chilly but not too bad, especially by the fire pits. The lights were beautiful. Jaina had lots of fun playing at the many stations as well. Once back home, we got warm and cozy and enjoyed the hot cocoa made by Grandma in our pyjamas. It was a very fun family holiday activity.

The 12 Days of Christmas
Jaina, Lewis, Auntie Veronica and I went to Heritage Park on Saturday to the 12 Days of Christmas. It was lots of fun, and not a bad day weather-wise. We enjoyed a sleigh ride, meeting Santa, making a craft, shopping in the Christmas market, decorating a gingerbread cookie, and having lunch. Lewis spent the whole day being carried around in his new Snugli, in which, surprisingly, he slept most of the time. Here are some photos.

December Activities Have Begun...
We have had a very busy first weekend of December. On Friday, Jaina and I built a Gingerbread Train. (Much easier than it looks, with a premade kit, there were even grooves in the tray so it stands up easily!) We had lots of fun decorating it and sampling the icing and the candies.
On Saturday, we attended cousin Devun's first birthday party. Happy Birthday Devun! The theme was monkeys and Kristie made very very cute cupcakes that looked just like monkey faces. (But sadly, we forgot our camera.) Jaina was kept very busy showing Devun how to open gifts. Aside from cousins Nate and Kristie, Matt's Uncle Lawrence and Aunt Agnes were there, as well as cousins Ryan and Pam, and cousins Jocelyn and Jason and their daughter Megan. It was nice to visit with some of the Olfert clan. Then we went to a Christmas party with the staff from Michelle's school. It was fun to socialize with my former co-workers, and made me remember how glad I am not to have to write report cards and do interviews this year! A nice break, for sure.
Today we went to the Christmas party for kids put on by Matt's employer. It was out at Spruce Meadows and was so much fun! For Jaina, anyway. Lewis took it all in and then had a nap. There was cookie decorating, face painting, crafts, clowns, lunch, music, and even gifts from Santa for both of them. They both sat on Santa's knee, which was a little intimidating for Jaina. Even Santa's reindeer were there for the kids to pet. It was a nice family activity and we all enjoyed ourselves.
Fortunately, the weather has warmed up from the -25 degrees C weather we experienced earlier in the week. Today was a balmy high of 1 degree. Now we just have to do other December activities such as shopping and wrapping gifts, baking, and getting those Christmas cards ready to mail. (Hopefully, they will be on their way soon).

New basement ceiling
A couple of weekends ago, Matt's dad came up and helped him put the ceiling in for the basement which we are working on finishing. We really appreciated all of the help. Our basement is one step closer to being finished. We just need to put a closet door in the guest bedroom, organize and clean the storage area, and put in the bathroom. These projects are all planned for the new year, hopefully to be done by springtime when we can work on our yard again. (Does it never end?). Jaina had a blast "building" with Daddy and Papa. Happy Birthdays!
Yesterday (Monday the 20th) was both Matt and his Dad's birthday. They were born on the same day, Matt in '74 and his Dad in '47. I will leave it up to you to do the math. It is nice for them to be able to share this day. We were fortunate this year as we were able to go to Lethbridge and celebrate together (usually, I am doing report cards like crazy this time of year, but since I'm off...) We enjoyed a turkey dinner on Saturday night and had ice cream birthday cake. It was Lewis's first visit to Grandma and Papa's house in Lethbridge, and Jaina had lots of fun too. She wore Papa out by playing all day long, and they made a gingerbread house together for Christmas. We had a great weekend.

Happy Halloween!
We had a fun day celebrating Halloween yesterday. Jaina enjoyed handing out candy at the door, although some costumes were a bit too spooky for her liking. Lewis slept through all the excitement. It was a fairly cold night (about -9 degrees C) so there was a busy time between about 6:00
and 7:30, and then it died down quickly. Jaina and Michelle first hopped in the car and went to trick-or-treat at Veronica and Chris' house which is only about 5 min. drive away. When we got back, Matt took Jaina trick-or-treating to the houses on our street. They were gone about a half hour and she has enough candy to last her a few months!! Jaina had lots of fun and is already asking if she can go out trick-or-treating again next year. We hope everybody else had a fun night too.

JAINA'S 3RD BIRTHDAY
We celebrated Jaina's 3rd birthday over the past week. It's hard to believe she is 3 years old already. Time is just flying by and all of a sudden she is seeming so much older. We had a great week of celebrating.
We had birthday dinner in Taber last weekend with her grandparents.
Tuesday she celebrated her birthday by going swimming with Matt in the morning and having Chinese food and birthday cupcakes for supper with us and her Auntie Veronica.
On Friday she had a Halloween-themed birthday party with her friends Taya, Parker, Shaun, Nathan and Devun. She had a Dora the Explorer birthday cake:
